Composed for four voices, The Thicket is a performance of intricate, rhythmic and melodic text - sometimes narrative, sometimes abstract, sometimes non-verbal. Written in an obsolete vernacular, the work is an arcane expression of the human relationship to its environment. Guided by an audio score, the four voices sing and speak melodies and rhythms otherwise impossible to perform.
Praise for The Thicket:
"It's not like much else I've heard... it's really knocked me sideways, in a good way."
Jen Allen, BBC Radio 3, Late Junction
"A meditation on humans and our place on Earth, conjuring both a sense of home and another world... Clarke reminds us that the barriers between real and imagined, natural and inorganic, aren't so strict."
Vanessa Ague, The Quietus
"Wow, this piece is really great... it's really fantastic"
